What it is

Desire and arousal · works for men and women

Every other option in this category works on blood flow. PT-141 does not — it acts on melanocortin receptors in the brain, on the pathway that produces desire in the first place. If the machinery works fine and the interest has gone, this is the one that matches the problem.

It is the same molecule licensed in the United States as Vyleesi for low sexual desire in premenopausal women, and it is prescribed to men here too. Your doctor sets the dose and the maximum number of uses per week.

What it does in your body

It agonises MC3R and MC4R receptors in the hypothalamus, upstream of the dopamine signalling involved in sexual desire. Because it works centrally rather than vascularly, it does not depend on the blood-flow response the way a PDE5 inhibitor does — and it does not produce an erection on its own.

What most people get, and the bit that matters

Common
Nausea in the first hour — the most common reason people stop
Flushing
Headache
A raised bump at the injection site for a few hours
Worth memorisingIt causes a transient rise in blood pressure and a small drop in heart rate for a few hours after injection. That is why your doctor takes a blood-pressure reading before prescribing and will not prescribe it if yours is uncontrolled.
Who should not take this
Uncontrolled high blood pressure or known cardiovascular disease
Pregnancy or breastfeeding
Anyone with a history of significant hyperpigmentation concerns
Combining with alcohol in any quantity that already makes you nauseous

This list is not exhaustive and does not replace the consultation. The intake form asks the questions that decide it, which is why the honest answers matter more than the fast ones.
